Book Review: Relit: 16 Latinx Remixes of Classic Stories

Book Blurb:
These sixteen stories by award-winning and bestselling YA authors center a Latinx point of view in an empowering anthology that reimagines classics through fantasy, science fiction, and with a dash of magic, for fans of A PHOENIX FIRST MUST BURN and RECLAIM THE STARS.

In classic stories remixed, Latinx characters take center stage.

Pride and Prejudice is launched into outer space, Frankenstein is plunged into the depths of the ocean, and The Great Gatsby floats to an island off the coast of Costa Rica.
A shape-shifter gives up her life to save the boy she loves from an evil bruja. La Ciguapa covets a little mermaid’s heart of gold. Two star-crossed teens fall in love while the planet burns around them.

Whether characters fall in love, battle foes, or grow through grief, each story will empower readers to see themselves as the heroes of the stories that make our world.

REVIEW:

RELIT is a delightful collection of classic stories and myths retold through a sci-fi/fantasy lens with a highlight on Latine voices. Even though I was only familiar with approximately half of the retellings in this anthology, I was able to thoroughly enjoy every story, as each tale provided enough details for it to feel like an immersive and complete story while still remaining short-story bite-sized that I could sneak in a read here or there throughout my busy days.

There was a 50-50 mix between sci-fi and fantasy genre, with the fantasy stories being a combination of contemporary/urban fantasy and more traditional/folklore-esque fantasy. A couple stories that really stood out include the dystopian cyborg mermaid (a remix of Frankenstein), three magical lakes and a mermaid with a heart of gold (remix of Little Mermaid), a shape-shifter bird trying to escape an evil bruja (remix of Nightingale and the Rose), and a young girl battling an ocean of sand in a bid to help her family survive (remix of The Old Man and the Sea).

For many of these stories, it was the first time I was reading works by those authors, and I’ll definitely need to check out their other works. Any reader who has a soft spot for retellings/reimaginings of time-old tales should definitely check out this book!
